Local man under starters orders for Sue Ryder Care to complete a marathon mission in a month

Man on a marathon mission 5 June 2008

A Berkshire man is part way through a marathon mission he has set himself, to complete a staggering seven charity runs in just four weeks and raise £1,000 for Sue Ryder Care.

Inspired by the expert and compassionate care his mother received at Sue Ryder Care – Nettlebed Hospice, Andrew Ogierman (44) from Maidenhead set himself the challenge to raise as much money as possible to help Nettlebed Hospice continue to deliver care to people living with far advanced, life limiting conditions including cancer.

Running in memory of his mother, Peggy, the first race Andrew ran - The Plymouth Half Marathon on the 25 May - marked the anniversary of when his mother was diagnosed with multiple cancers.  The last of the seven runs Andrew will run, the Maidenhead 5km on the 25 June, will mark the anniversary of when his mother died.

Andrew said, “The dedicated and quality level of care my mother received at Nettlebed Hospice before she died was a real comfort at such a distressing time.  So, as a year since my mother died approached, I thought a good way to remember her would be to raise money for Sue Ryder Care.

“I decided to embark on a series of runs so that I could raise more money than if I just ran one race.  Initially my aim was to run a marathon – a total of 42km – but a few races got added so I will be running, in total, just over a marathon and a half, 66km.”

Andrew added, “It has been tough going because I have an Achilles injury and running is not really helping.  I’m determined to cross the finishing line of each of the next four races though.  I’m particularly looking forward to the Maidenhead 5km as it is in my home town – and also because it is the last one!”

Andrew has successfully completed three of the seven runs – the Plymouth Half Marathon, the BUPA London 10km and the Burnham 5km – and is well on his way to reaching his fundraising target.  With a further four runs to go – the Dorney Dash 10km, the Marlow 5km, the Wargrave 10km and the Maidenhead 5km – throughout June, Andrew is appealing to local people to help him raise as much money as possible for Sue Ryder Care.

Laura Savory, events organiser at Sue Ryder Care, said, “We are delighted Andrew is supporting Sue Ryder Care in this way.  I hope as many people as possible support him – either through sponsoring him or cheering him on at his next four runs.

“Running for Sue Ryder Care is a great way to get fit and feel fantastic.  Sue Ryder Care is there every step of the way with training and fundraising hints and tips to prepare runners.  And, we will be there on the day itself to cheer you on. People who run for Sue Ryder Care will be helping us help more people with conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease and stroke.
